The London Chair Collective

Upholstery by Pia St John

I studied contemporary fine art at Central St. Martins College of Art & Design where my practice used textiles, and later the City & Guilds courses at London Metropolitan University taught me the beautiful old trade of upholstery. All upholsterers love chairs; they are as interesting on the inside as they are on the outside, and can be as beautiful. I'm a jobbing upholsterer working in north London, and my own chairs, which lean towards artwork have appeared in exhibitions, magazines, advertising, for the theatre and as shop fixtures.
